O taste and see that the LORD is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
We were blessed and touched by our fellow sisters and brothers who opened their hearts and allowed themselves to be vulnerable as they shared about their faith experiences from the recent Treasure Retreat.
Recommitting My Life to God – A Daily Decision
One of our brothers shared that his main takeaway from the retreat was on the importance of the Examen in our daily lives.
The Examen is a method of reviewing your day in the presence of God. It’s actually an attitude more than a method, a time set aside for thankful reflection on where God is in your everyday life.
During the reflective sessions of the retreat, he received a compelling message from God about going through the examen every day. He then related an incident which happened recently. While clearing the clutter at his home, he came across a pile of notes from his school days, particularly a few from college. As he skimmed through his notes, he noticed some personal jottings on unanswered questions about life, and how he was puzzled about its complexities. He also recalled having a bout of depression, insomnia and personal struggles during that period of his life.
This incident triggered him to revisit his past, as he believed that his life would have been very different, and perhaps more positive, if he had known God during those times of uncertainty, and if he had dedicated special time with God through reflection. While he recognised that he could have gone deeper and more profoundly in reflection during his days of youth, he reminds himself that God ultimately has a plan for him.
He realised that it was often easy to document our lives, but to review what we have documented with the eyes of faith requires us to spend dedicated time with our Lord. Where possible, it would even be essential to share it with others.
The retreat and the examen have taught him to fully surrender to God. He was reminded that our surrender to God only lasts for 24 hours. And it was necessary for him, and for us, to recommit our lives to God every single day, allowing Jesus to speak to and through us.
He shared the following video on the importance of the examen:
He also presented a prayer card which we could refer to. As a community, we are highly encouraged to pray the examen at least three times a week.
